| Timken Company research engineers are refining a railroad-bearing design that will wirelessly transmit critical operating data and indicate potential bearing and wheel problems before
damage occurs. This new intelligent system has the potential to save thousands of dollars in train stops, false alarms and derailments. The self-powered sensing system mounts inside the bearing and uses wireless RF technology to transmit performance data to a car-mounted receiver. The information is then passed through an intelligent interface that can communicate with the locomotive’s computer system or an outside network for analysis. Timken has been working with wire-based “smart bearing” systems for the rail industry since the early 1990’s.
