Torque Technology provides fuel cost savings
Almost 50 years after the introduction of the self-contained, pre-adjusted and pre-lubricated Timken® AP™ bearing package, a renewed commitment to innovation can be seen at The Timken Company, as engineers continue to research and develop new products that will bring maximum new efficiencies and satisfaction to Timken rail customers. Advancements in low torque bearings could provide significant fuel cost savings to customers.
The concept of torque is based on the principles of friction and energy. The lower the friction and resistance within the bearing, the lower the torque and energy that is required to pull a rail car. Timken is developing a rail bearing that reduces torque by approximately 33 percent.
With modifications to existing surface finishes, grease and seals, a low torque bearing is currently in testing and could soon be ready for production.
