Torrington steering column shafts transmit torque through angles between the steering wheel and the intermediate shaft that connects to the steering gear. There are three basic styles: upper pivot, lower pivot and fixed. Pivot designs allow the steering wheel to be tilted for driver comfort.
Each type consists of a solid or hollow shaft with a locking feature and connection points. The upper pivot uses a patented, integral ball hub universal joint. Lower pivot and fixed designs require an additional universal joint. These shafts frequently incorporate energy-absorbing features. Special locking collars can be supplied to meet European anti-theft requirements.
Torrington designs steering column shafts to meet the performance requirements of passenger cars, light trucks and sport utility vehicles.
