X-ray Tube | Precision Rotary | Gimbal

Timken Super Precision has built a worldwide reputation as the leader in precision assembly manufacturing.  With a global network of manufacturing and sourcing capability and a highly qualified staff of bearing specialists, Timken Super Precision is ready to provide superior service for precision assemblies in any markets around the world.

X-ray Tube Bearings

Timken Super Precision bearing applications can be found in X-ray tubes. For example  CT (Computerized Tomography) bearing applications are among the most extreme environments for a bearing.  Using a solid lubrication system the bearings operate at 400C–500C in a 1 x 10-6 mm Hg Vacuum, with speeds up to 180 hz.  The bearing can reach contact stresses of 300–350 kpsi. CT systems hold about 16% of the medical imaging market. Minimum noise and maximum life are a constant desire.  This is achieved through high precision bearings that are manufactured to thermal compensating designs.

Traditional X-ray applications remain the most popular choice for imaging among hospitals and imaging centers, currently accounting for 33 percent of medical imaging market.  These bearings run at lower speeds with less contact stresses than a CT system.  Another tube applications using bearings is the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging).  These tubes require noise levels of 60db or less.  Achieving these levels is very difficult for a rolling element bearing.  All bearings are made from high hardness tool steels, with special coatings and unique designs to extend the life and improve performance of an X-ray tube.

Precision Rotary Assemblies... Our Specialty

Timken Super Precision specializes in the building of rotary assemblies, taking our bearing design and manufacturing expertise to the next higher level.

These assemblies often incorporate commercially available bearings. We also design and produce specialized integral assemblies, which utilize super precision bearings that are mated with components manufactured to extremely tight tolerances. Integral assemblies provide the ultimate bearing solution by avoiding tolerance stack-ups. If precise fits are required for system accuracy, we can match fit bearings and components for higher yields and total lower cost to you.  Applications include assemblies for the computer,  Space flight, medical, dental an fuel control industries.

Gimbal Assemblies

In the past forty years, Timken Super Precision has participated in the design and / or production of many spin gimbal systems, beginning with the Redeye and Sidewinder AIM-9C (a radar version) seekers and continuing through, the many versions of Sidewinder (AIM-9E-G-H-J-L-M-P-S), as well as Chaparral (MIM-72), Laser Maverick (AGM-65), Stinger (FIM-92), and now BAT.

With over one-half million man-hours experience, the Timken Super Precision Gimbal Systems Group is a production-oriented team established to manufacture electro/optical mechanical assemblies. It can produce to customer specifications or provide engineering services as required. These capabilities extend to virtually any type of mechanical motion assembly or sub-assembly where weight and space economics, plus high precision, are key elements. By virtue of its organization, technical skills, facilities, and extensive experience, the Gimbal Systems Group is equipped to engineer and produce precision devices to military quality standards and performance levels.

We also offer repair/rework facilities to the O.E.M. as well as the Defense Department Depots.
